This property has a story…..and what a spectacular one at that.
Maurice and Dorothea Shaffer purchased the breathtaking property in 1952. They lived on the “farm” two to three months out of the year. Mrs. Shaffer loved the property. The Estate House is filled with beautiful antiques and memorabilia that she purchased from her many trips all over the world. Her love of travel led her to many countries, including Africa, Germany, China, and England.
Dr. Dorothea Shaffer loved art. She was dedicated to teaching and enjoyed her job teaching art in the Harrrisburg High Schools. Mr. Shaffer was an attorney and business owner. They were quite the entrepreneurs owning several businesses such as Shaffer Trucking, standard wheel and rim stores and heavy duty parts stores.
The Shaffers were blessed financially but had a deep desire to give back to others and the community. Dr. Shaffer served as a trustee on many college boards. Her generous gifts to many universities such as Shippensburg University, Messiah College and Syracuse University have allowed students to pursue their love of education. If you are an art major at Syracuse University, you most likely take your core classes in the Shaffer Arts building. The Shaffer’s consistently offered full scholarships that included tuition, room and board for at least 8 students pursing their college degrees.
The Shaffers were pillars in the community and their legacy lives on through the love of Whispering Pines Estate from the current owners Harriet & Donald Reeser and Brenda & Dr. Larry Cox.
